Las Vegas area fishing report

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 11:12 a.m.

LAKE MEAD: Boaters continue to enjoy fair to good action for striped and largemouth bass while shore anglers are finding that the fish are well beyond their casting range.

A boater reported to the Nevada Division of Wildlife that he has been catching stripers by trolling at the 40-foot level in Las Vegas Bay. Over the weekend Sand Island was the hot spot for stripers.

Anglers who have been fishing in the Overton Arm have had success with stripers recently at the Meat Hole and the Meadows. However, the fish are moving and at times boaters have been unable to locate the fish.

Largemouth bass are still in coves and boaters are catching them with jigs and spinnerbaits. Division of Wildlife creel clerks checked boaters last week who caught crappie at night in the Virgin Narrows with live minnows.

LAKE MOHAVE: Striped bass fishing has been fair for small fish when the winds have been calm enough to allow boaters to venture onto the lake. The better place for stripers has been in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove.

A pair of fishing tournaments over the weekend attracted 30 competitors who caught an average of nearly two largemouth bass per day. Most of the fish were taken in coves with jigs and spinners.

The next Willow Beach trout plant is scheduled for Thursday, May 18.
