Editorial: This odd couple is one for the ages

Wednesday, May 10, 2000 | 9:30 a.m.

The axiom that politics creates strange bedfellows certainly fits the alliance of President Clinton and one of his congressional archenemies, Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas. Yes, you read that right, DeLay and Clinton have found harmony on at least one issue: granting permanent, normal trading privileges with China.

As the New York Times reported Tuesday, the two even met privately in the Oval Office to share political strategy on how to win passage of the China trade legislation. Aides to DeLay and Clinton, though, say the truce only extends to China. That's too bad.

Imagine if Clinton's legendary charm persuaded DeLay, who is known as the "Hammer" for his ability to strong-arm fellow representatives to vote his way, to join with him on other important issues to the nation, such as campaign finance reform and a patient's bill of rights. Now that would be real progress.
