Manley receives repeat verdict
The way the death penalty is applied in Nevada is "arbitrary and discriminatory."
So said Charles Edward Manley this morning moments before District Judge John McGroarty formally sentenced Manley, 53, to die by lethal injection in the March 1995 shooting death of local teacher Roxanne Logan, 43.
It was the second time Manley was sentenced to die for the murder of Logan. The Nevada Supreme Court overturned his 1997 conviction and sentence and ordered a new trial.
The second jury reached the same conclusions as the first in March.
Grand jury studies death of tourist
A Clark County grand jury was expected to decide today whether a Las Vegas woman should be indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with Sunday's death of a man struck by a car almost three weeks ago.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Gary Booker will be presenting evidence against Juanita Kim McDonald, 24, in the death of Mike Wienkes, 36, of Mineral Point, Wis.
According to police, McDonald was driving on Las Vegas Boulevard South April 19 when her car drove up onto the sidewalk in front of the Aladdin hotel-casino, striking six pedestrians from behind.
Wienkes died Sunday morning after remaining in a coma since the accident. Clark County Coroner Ron Flud said an autopsy showed Wienkes died as a result of multiple traumatic injuries. His death was ruled accidental.
McDonald remains in the Clark County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.
New offices set in Boulder City
Instead of expanding its headquarters in Boulder City's historic district, the Bureau of Reclamation has decided to build separate offices about a half-mile away in an effort to locate 120 employees closer to headquarters and out of temporary housing across town.
The new complex, which will include a 30,000-square-foot building for bureau employees and include facilities for city staff, will be located near Railroad and Colorado avenues.
