The UNLV track and field team closed its regular season Sunday with several impressive finishes at the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State University.
Sophomore Michele Davis made perhaps the biggest splash at the meet, trimming 0.25 seconds off her NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 200 meters and climbing from the nation's 16th-best performance to ninth on the list. Davis clocked 23.23 in the event and finished second.
Another of the Rebels' provisional qualifiers, Jenni Nelson, claimed a second-place finish. She ran the 3,000 meters in 10:18.18 and trailed only former Rebel Angie Fortner in the race. Fortner was competing unattached, and Nelson was the top finisher in the event among NCAA competition.
Ayanna Hutchinson and Tianika Sharrieff both scored third-place finshes. Hutchinson enjoyed a quick run in the 100 meters, finishing just 0.01 seconds off her personal best with a mark of 11.29. Sharrieff cleared 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump to tie for third.
UNLV will compete in the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships May 18-20 at Provo, Utah.
