Revenues increase, losses widen for phone company

Rochester, N.Y.-based Mpower Communications Corp., which operated in Las Vegas as MGC Communications, reported record revenue and a larger loss for the first quarter.

Mpower, a broadband data, Internet and telephone services company that is attempting to position itself as a leader in voice over digital subscriber line service, had revenue of $25.5 million in the first three months of 2000 compared with $8.4 million for the first quarter of 1999.

The company, which is developing communications networks in California, Chicago, Atlanta and South Florida as well as Las Vegas, had losses of $31.8 million, $1.18 a share, compared with $14.2 million, 83 cents a share, in the first quarter of 1999.

Mpower President and Chief Executive Officer Rolla Huff said the company is "breaking new ground in the deployment and provisioning of VoDSL." At the end of the quarter, the company had 168,786 lines in service, a 159 percent increase over the total at the end of the first quarter of 1999. The company now has 236 sales representatives.
