Release of state employees’ names still undecided
Monday, May 8, 2000 | 2:26 a.m.
Assistant Attorney General Thomas Patton said he would review laws and court opinions before determining whether the state should identify the employees who incurrred $57,000 in debts on their Diners Club state charge cards.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal has requested that the employees be identified, but the AG's office said it must balance the right of privacy for the employees with the public's right to know.
The workers were reimbursed by the state for their state-authorized travel, but did not pay the amount due on their Diners Club cards.
Because of the debt incurred by the 40 employees, Diners Club wants to impose an annual $10 per employee charge on all state workers with charge cards.
Because about 2,900 state employees receive the cards, the debt by the workers would cost the state $29,000 a year in additional charges.
