Prep tournaments kick into high gear this week
Monday, May 8, 2000 | 10:16 a.m.
If last week's baseball action served as an appetizer, Southern Nevada prep sports fans will be treated to the main course this week, as nine postseason tournaments will be played in the next five days.
Things get under way Tuesday with the 18-hole Southern Zone Golf Championship at Henderson's Anthem Country Club. Eight local teams, along with the top golfers from non-qualifying teams, will participate. Action begins at 1 p.m.
On Wednesday, the three-day Sunrise and Sunset Softball Tournaments will begin at Henderson's Sunset Park. Eight teams will be playing for two state berths in each region, with the first games to begin at 1 p.m.
Also on Wednesday, two regional boys volleyball tournaments get under way, with Chaparral High hosting the Sunrise event and Clark the site of the Sunset regional. The three-day tournaments will determine which four teams will play in next week's first 4A State Tournament. Action begins at 1:45 p.m. at Chaparral and 2:45 p.m. at Clark.
Regional baseball action continues today with four losers bracket games. The baseball tourneys run through Saturday.
Friday will mark the start of the two-day Southern Zone Track & Field Championship, with all athletes competing at Las Vegas High. Action gets under way 3:30 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
Also on Friday and Saturday, the area's top swimmers and divers will congregate at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium for the two-day Southern Zone Championships. Swimming begins Friday at 4 p.m.; diving gets started Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
