Foundation will honor local leaders
The "I Have a Dream" Foundation is holding its second annual fund-raising dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Desert Inn.
"Dream Maker" awards will be presented to Mayor Oscar Goodman and his wife, Carolyn, and KLAS Channel 8 General Manager Dick Fraim.
The "Dream Builder" award will be presented to Sheriff Jerry Keller, and UNLV basketball player Kaspars Kambala will receive the "Volunteer of the Year" award.
Tickets are $150 per person and all proceeds benefit Las Vegas youth in the "I Have a Dream" Foundation program. Call Pat Barnum at 269-5049.
Author will sign copies on Saturday
Las Vegas author Branch Whitney will sign copies of his second book, "Hiking Southern Nevada," 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Red Wing Shoe Store, 4616 W. Charleston Blvd.
His latest guidebook includes new hikes at Mount Charleston and Red Rock Canyon and trails in the Lake Mead area and the Valley of Fire State Park.
Mother's Day fashion show set
Soroptimist International of Henderson/Green Valley will present a Mother's Day brunch, fashion show and silent auction at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Desert Willows Ballroom, Horizon Ridge Parkway.
The event will benefit Soroptimist charities. Cost is $20. For more information, call Judie Boyer at 433-6122.
Workshop scheduled at Henderson facility
A floral design workshop is being offered 9:30 a.m.-noon Thursday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., Henderson.
Cost is $20. A list of required supplies will be available at registration. Call 565-2121.
Get a discount to Crafter's Village
The Salvation Army will be collecting food items at the Crafter's Village Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Cashman Center.
Donors will get a $1 discount off the ticket price in exchange for nonperishable food items. Call 870-4430, Ext. 18.
Free lecture planned by Archaeo-Nevada group
Howard Hahn will present a free lecture, "The Turtle in Native American Spiritual and Material Culture," to the Archaeo-Nevada Society 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Community College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd., Building D, Room 224.
Hahn, president of the society, will explain how the turtle was valued as a clan symbol, a musical instrument and a wise and patient character in many of their stories. Call 597-1691.
Young poets
A poetry contest for children ages 11-19 is being sponsored by North Las Vegas Library and Target Stores.
Prizes will be awarded 7 p.m. June 1 at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive. Deadline is May 15. Call Kathleen Hanselmann at 633-2070.
