Others enter race for House
Friday, May 5, 2000 | 9:12 a.m.
Charles Schneider, a Libertarian, is running for Congressional District 1, which encompasses most of the Las Vegas Valley.
The Independent American Party filed its list of candidates Wednesday -- a slate that includes perennial candidate and one of the party's founders, Daniel Hansen, and three of his relatives.
Hansen, a Sparks businessman, is a candidate for Congress District 2, which includes all of Nevada excluding some areas of Clark County. His brother, Christopher Hansen, is running for the House in District 1.
Daniel Hansen jokes that he's addicted to politics and hopes seven will be his lucky number. Hansen has been on the ballot six times before, without success. He ran twice for governor, twice for Congress, once for lieutenant governor and once for the Assembly.
He quipped that the brothers can run an economical campaign using the same "Hansen for Congress" signs.
Joshua Hansen, Christopher's son, is a candidate for Clark County Commission District A.
Jonathan Hansen, an attorney, is a candidate for Clark County Assembly District 13. Jonathan is the son of Joel Hansen, who twice ran unsuccessfully for attorney general. Joel is one of the party's presidential electors.
Ernest Berghof of Las Vegas is the independent party's choice for U.S. Senate.
The party is running candidates in two state Senate districts and seven Assembly districts.
In Northern Nevada, a former chemistry teacher at Valley High School, is running for the newly created position of District Court judge in the Churchill-Lyon counties district.
Lyon County District Attorney Robert Estes, 52, filed for the position Wednesday. He is in his second term in his present position.
Estes practiced civil law in Southern Nevada before moving to Northern Nevada to get into criminal prosecution work.
District Judge Valorie Vega will run to retain her seat in Department 2 in Las Vegas. Vega was appointed in February 1999 to fill the vacant Department 2 post.
