Berkley backs measure to improve Nellis housing

Rep. Shelley Berkley Wednesday supported a $5 million federal spending bill to build and improve family housing at Nellis Air Force Base.
While the spending bill has yet to clear the House and Senate, the item was included at the request of Berkeley, D-Nev., and is expected to pass through Congress.
The federal funding would be used to construct housing for 50 military families currently living in severely deteriorated structures on the base.
The replacement of housing stock at Nellis Terrace would complete the eighth phase in the effort to replace the units in most disrepair.
The new housing would provide modern, efficient units that meet current Air Force standards as well as neighborhood enhancements that include desert landscaping, playgrounds, and recreation areas, Berkley said.
The new units are expected to increase the appeal of the base to private firms, who will bid next year on a contract to privatize management of the base's housing.
