Rebel golfers roll to win in Mountain West event

Thursday, May 4, 2000 | 11:05 a.m.

The UNLV golf team captured its first conference title since 1996 Wednesday by blistering the PGA West course in Palm Desert, Calif., with a tournament-best 19-under par. The Rebels had a 23-stroke margin over runner-up New Mexico at the Mountain West Conference tournament.

Leading the charge was UNLV senior All-American Michael Kirk, who shot his third straight subpar round to capture the individual title.

UNLV senior All-American Jeremy Anderson was tabbed the MWC Player of the Year after turning in three straight subpar rounds to take over the MWC lead in stroke average from BYU's Andy Miller. Anderson is ranked eighth in the country.

Kirk and Anderson were also honored on the All-MWC team, along with Colorado State's Nigel Spence, BYU's Miller and Manuel Merizalde and San Diego State's Scott Piercy.

Piercy finished third and Anderson and UNLV junior Scott Lander tied for fourth.

The Rebels' fourth scorer was freshman Calvin Kupeyan, who capped his tourney with a 2-under-par round Wednesday. Robert Sul was the Rebels' fifth man, finishing eighth overall at one over par.

UNLV looks to carry its hot streak into the NCAA West Regional Championships May 18-20 at the River Bend Golf Club in Madera, Calif.
