Behind the scenes: Carl Barbeau and Todd Imboden

Thursday, May 4, 2000 | 12:05 p.m.

CARL BARBEAU / Basic High Athletic Administrator

Contribution to prep sports: Barbeau, in his 23rd year in the Clark County School District, has spent the past three years as his school's athletic adminis-trator. For the next two weeks, he is also serving as the tournament director for the Sunrise Region Baseball Tournament at Henderson's Burkholder Field. "I've always been involved in sports myself," said Barbeau, a former Rancho football, wrestling and track coach. "I just enjoy working with kids." As the Sunrise Tournament director, Barbeau is responsible for organizing the event's staff and securing the Burkholder Park area so that admission can be collected for all tournament contests. Between his other duties, he also gets the opportunity to sit back and enjoy a few minutes of the action out on the field. "It's a great field," Barbeau said.

TODD IMBODEN / Parks Maintenance

Contribution to prep sports: Imboden is responsible for keeping Henderson's Burkholder Field -- site of this week's Sunrise Region Baseball Tournament and the upcoming 4A State Tournament -- in shape for almost constant use by local leagues. A former baseball player himself at Boulder City High and Grand Canyon (Ariz.) College, Imboden has a good understanding of what is required to get a field ready for a game. "When I played in college, we were responsible for taking care of the field, so that's where I got a grasp of this," he said. "Water is real important, and we mow this field three days a week." To meet NIAA regulations, Imboden and supervisor Steve Ortiz built a new mound earlier this year, replacing a 12-inch mound with one 10 inches high. "I love baseball, and I have an idea of what they want the field to be like," Imboden said.
