Recruit back with Rebels after incident with student

Wednesday, May 3, 2000 | 10:06 a.m.

UNLV coach John Robinson said star linebacker recruit Lamar Owens was still a member of the Rebel football team despite a recent altercation with a female student in a class.

Owens was suspended for a week during the end of spring practice drills and is being required to undergo anger management counseling. He was allowed to return to play in UNLV's final spring scrimmage.

"A girl punched him and he knocked her down," Robinson said. "(Owens) obviously reacted improperly. We took what we thought were appropriate measures."

Robinson said there would be no further discipline for Owens.

The 6-3, 225-pound Owens transferred to UNLV in January from Fresno City College, where he earned all-state honors. He finished the spring listed as the starter at strong side outside linebacker for the Rebels next fall.

"Heck yeah we were surprised it happened," Robinson said. "But we did what we thought we had to do to correct the problem."
