Monday, May 1, 2000 | 10:04 a.m.
New Mexico defeated the UNLV baseball team 14-4 on Sunday afternoon, completing a sweep of a three-game Mountain West Conference series at Albuquerque, N.M.
The first-place Lobos, who outscored UNLV 38-10 in the series, improved to 31-16 overall and 19-5 in the MWC. UNLV dropped to 17-30 overall and 7-15 in the MWC (fifth place).
UNLV jumped out to an early 4-0 lead Sunday with three runs in the first and one in the second. Outfielder Nate Kaup, who was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, had a two-run double in the first inning. UNLV scored its fourth run in the second inning on an RBI single by center fielder Denny Seybert, the only other Rebel with two hits (2-for-4).
New Mexico then scored 14 unanswered runs, including six in the second inning against right-hander Joe Maruffi (4-6).
The Lobos took advantage of five UNLV errors to score eight unearned runs in the game.
UNLV will resume MWC play this weekend against Air Force in the Rebels' final homestand of the regular season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels and Falcons will play five games in three days, a result of two makeup games from earlier in the season.
The series will feature doubleheaders on Friday (5:05 p.m., with the completion of a suspended game) and Saturday (1:05 p.m.). The series will conclude Sunday (1:05 p.m.).
