Airlines’ tax bills cut

Thursday, March 30, 2000 | 10:47 a.m.

A number of airlines in Nevada, most of them small, received favorable tax decisions from the state Board of Equalization. The board sets the assessed value of companies.

The board agreed to lower the assessed value, used for computing taxes, for Scenic Airlines Inc. from $2.6 million to $1.2 million. Terry Rubald of the state Department of Taxation said the Las Vegas firm showed it sold a plane last year that should not be on the tax rolls for this year.

Also, the Taxation Department lowered the value of construction work in progress for America West Airlines from $980,449 to $130,737.

Two airlines ended up with zero assessed values. Hutt Aviation sold its only plane and its proposed value for next year was dropped from $62,800. Las Vegas Airlines' assessed value was originally set at $57,900 but it has since gone into bankruptcy and is no longer operating.

Champion Air won a reduction from $914,000 to $603,000 on its assessment for last year and from $621,000 to $488,000 in the present year. And Transmeridian Airlines' unsecured assessed value was dropped from $269,000 to $18,000.
