Bandits sign Ackles
Wednesday, March 29, 2000 | 11:34 a.m.
The Las Vegas Silver Bandits of the International Basketball League today signed George Ackles for the remainder of the season. Ackles, 33, is a 6-10, 245-pound center who starred at UNLV during the 1988-89 and 1990-91 seasons. While at UNLV, Ackles helped the Rebels to two NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Final Four in 1991.
During the 1988-89 season Ackles shattered the UNLV single-season record for blocked shots with 64. He broke his own record two years later with 77 blocks, which now ranks second at UNLV behind Keon Clark's 112 in 1996-97.
In 1991, he was a second-round draft choice of the Miami Heat. Ackles played in the Continental Basketball Association with the Rapid City Thrillers and has played overseas in Spain and Lebanon.
In order to sign Ackles, the Silver Bandits placed guard Doug Lee on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
The Silver Bandits play Trenton tonight and San Diego on Friday and Saturday nights at the Thomas & Mack Center.
