America West building flight training center in Phoenix

Tuesday, March 28, 2000 | 11:02 a.m.

America West Airlines will build a flight training center in Phoenix, near Sky Harbor Airport.

America West, the No. 2 carrier at McCarran International Airport by passenger volume, operates a Las Vegas hub.

The $35 million center also will house the airline's flight operations center, where dispatchers track and route flights nationwide.

Spokesman Steve Johnson said the current flight operations center is inadequate for the technology needed.

Construction should begin this summer with completion in about a year.

America West is leasing the 13-acre site from the city for 15 years with an option for an additional 15.

The center will replace a variety of scattered facilities now used for training. It will include eight flight simulators and a full-cabin mockup.
