Letter: No-Guinn situation
Friday, March 24, 2000 | 9:23 a.m.
In reading Ron Kantowski's March 16 column concerning UNLV booster and Las Vegas dentist Dr. David Chapman giving ex-UNLV (recruit) Lamar Odom $5,600, I think we have another stupid Republican politician in Nevada.
Gov. Kenny Guinn had some "regular" Nevada comments about the case. And I quote: "What do you do? They can't have scholarship tickets, they can't be around the team but you can't keep them from coming to the games. They can buy a ticket like anybody else."
Come again?
What is Guinn talking about? Does he think overzealous boosters like Chapman should be allowed to buy tickets like anybody else, or sneak around on the sly, shelling out thousands on the side to the players?
It sounds as if the Tarkanian system is still around. I thought UNLV was supposed to have cleaned all of that up. The thinking evidently hasn't changed.
