Letter: GOP is soft on environment
Friday, March 24, 2000 | 9:59 a.m.
Any Republican worth his salt should never forget Sen. John Chafee, R-R.I., who died suddenly in October 1999. He was the chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and both political powers then supported his views. He voted 70 percent of the time for the environment.
But in a recent issue of the conservation magazine, Defenders of Wildlife: "The average lifetime score of the remaining Republican committee members is a miserable 11 percent! (Remember, that this is a Senate committee charged with protection of the environment!)" Are dollars and pandering to special interests more important than leaving a glorious environment for our children and grandchildren?
This is an election year! Think very carefully before you vote. It is not for today, it is for posterity!
