Herbst brothers continue hot streak

Las Vegas desert racing brothers Tim and Troy Herbst enjoyed a day of firsts last Saturday as the top two finishers in the 14th annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250.
In winning for the second straight race, Tim Herbst drove solo for the first time in his Ford F-150 Trophy-Truck, capturing the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division in Round 2 of the 2000 SCORE Desert Series with a time of 3 hours, 39 minutes, 16 seconds, averaging 57.14 mph over the rugged 208.8-mile course.
Troy Herbst, driving a Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car, finished second overall while winning the unlimited Class 1 title in 3:40:29, just one minute, 48 seconds behind his older brother.
For Troy Herbst, 33, the three-time defending SCORE Class 1 season point champion, the victory was his first in San Felipe.
The Herbst brothers led a large group of Southern Nevada desert racers to Mexico as 12 of the 17 who started the race made it to the finish line within the 10-hour time limit.
Ed Herbst debuted the team's new Ford F-150 four-wheel "Trophy-Truck in progress" in Class 1, running as high as third overall behind his brothers before being forced out midway through the race with a broken driveline.
The team of Las Vegas' Billy Goerke and Brian Collins won Class 8 for the second straight race, finishing 12th overall in 4:17:49 in the Collins Motorsports Chevrolet C-1500.
Adam Pfankuch of Carlsbad, Calif., won Class 1-2/1600, edging 1998 series class champion Bekki Freeman of Henderson by just under five minutes. In Class 1, the other local finishers were John Gaughan (fourth) and Pat Dean (16th).
Besides Freeman, the other Southern Nevada racers who finished in Class 1-2/1600 were Sammy Ehrenberg (eighth), Rudy Cortez (13th) and Laughlin's Steve Roberts (14th).
Henderson's Mark Hutchins was fourth in Class 10 and Las Vegas' Clay Flippin was seventh. Gary Vosburg of North Las Vegas finished third in the Protruck division.
