Diedrich Coffee Inc. plans to open 17 coffeehouses as well as an undetermined number of kiosks in Nevada.
The Irvine, Calif.-based company is the nation's second largest retailer of specialty coffee, after Seattle-based Starbucks Inc.
Diedrich spokesman Dan Cahill said up to five of the new coffeehouses would be located in Northern Nevada, with the balance opening in Southern Nevada.
Cahill said a real estate site assessment is currently under way in Nevada, and site selection should begin shortly. The first coffeehouses will likely open within the next six to nine months. The local franchises will be run by California-based M & P Coffee.
The Nevada expansion is part of Diedrich's national push to add as many as 1,500 new coffeehouses over the next five to seven years.
Diedrich currently operates 360 outlets in 38 states and nine foreign countries. It's products are sold under the brand names Diedrich Coffee and Gloria Jean's Coffees.
