Washoe County health officer fired
Thursday, March 23, 2000 | 10:05 a.m.
The board's action Wednesday night followed a six-hour closed personnel session with employees, managers and Charmichael.
Afterwards, the board issued a statement, saying Carmichael's management style, lack of leadership and program changes resulted in low morale and a lack of confidence among staffers.
Carmichael was hired in September following a two-year search for a county health officer.
But after only a few months on the job, an anonymous letter was delivered to board members that purported to represent the feelings of most of the department's 215 employees.
Managers and employees complained of Carmichael's arrogance, lack of communication with staff and unilaterial decision making.
