Waste bill passes the House

The House today passed a nuclear waste bill, 253-167.
Nevada's Representatives, Republican Jim Gibbons and Democrat Shelley Berkley, hailed the vote as a victory because President Clinton has threatened to veto it. Bill supporters would have needed 290 votes to over-ride the veto.
"The vote was a victory for Nevada because we achieved for the first time a sufficient vote to sustain the President's veto on the House side and that works hand in hand with what Senate has done on this issue," Gibbons said.
The Senate passed the bill 64-34 on Feb. 10. The Senate needs just 34 votes to sustain the veto and Nevada senators are confident no senators will change their votes.
