Letter: Politicians, rich profit from oil while people pay
Tuesday, March 21, 2000 | 10:21 a.m.
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan must control inflation by raising interest rates again. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson doesn't think we have anything to worry about. Has he filled his gas tank lately? Oh, yeah, I am sure his transportation is furnished by taxpayers.
Kuwait owes us an explanation. Is it they who cut oil production because the good ol' boys billionaire club OPEC decided to gouge and jack up the price per barrel of oil? Cut oil production and get richer! Higher oil prices are our reward for saving Kuwait.
Who paid for the Gulf War? The American people with tax dollars and lives. Did Kuwait or any OPEC nation supply free jet fuel, oil, gasoline or weapons? Our children and their children will be burdened for many years with taxes to pay for the Gulf War -- there isn't any free war! Now we get higher fuel prices. Why should we be held hostage by the Mideast nations?
The United States has an enormous shale deposit and possesses the technology to extract oil from shale. Why not buy more oil from our neighbor Mexico?
Seemingly the rich the world over take good care of the rich! Do we have any poor elected politicians? Any poor oil men?
