Jackpot winner switching hospitals

Tuesday, March 21, 2000 | 11:18 a.m.

When Cynthia Jay-Brennan hit the world-record $35 million Megabucks slot jackpot in January, the 37-year-old cocktail waitress could afford all of the best things in life.

Sadly, one of those things will be the best rehabilitation treatment money can buy.

Jay-Brennan, who was seriously injured March 11 when the car she was driving was rear-ended allegedly by a drunken driver, is scheduled to be transferred early Wednesday from University Medical Center to the private Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Denver.

The accident killed Jay-Brennan's sister, Lela Anne Jay, 45, a passenger in Jay-Brennan's 1999 Chevrolet Camaro when they were rear-ended at a red light at Boulder Highway and Indios Avenue.

UMC confirmed that Jay-Brennan would be transferred as early as Wednesday morning to Craig. It was the patient's decision, the hospital said. Craig officials confirmed that Jay-Brennan was scheduled to be admitted Wednesday.

Craig Hospital, which has been named one of the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in America by U.S. News and World Report, has since 1956 treated 23,000 patients, including victims of paralyzing football injuries and other accidents. It specializes in spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.

According to Craig's Internet website, the hospital "has a professional yet casual, relaxed and upbeat family atmosphere. Patients and families discover that Craig is an appealing alternative to the traditional hospital environment, as we emphasize an individualized and comprehensive approach to treatment."

Jay-Brennan remained in serious condition this morning at UMC. Hospital officials have remained tight-lipped about the extent of her injuries.
