Monday, March 20, 2000 | 11:06 a.m.
The pilot was able to walk away after the F-5 Freedom Fighter from the Fallon Naval Air Station flipped over at the north end of the runway near Mill Street.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by a Navy team. High winds prevailed at the airport when the crash occurred.
The pilot's name was unavailable. A Fallon base spokeswoman didn't immediately return phone calls.
The crash didn't disrupt commercial service as airliners were diverted to another runway, airport officials said.
The pilot escaped with scrapes and bruises.
