Riviera to host women’s summit

Friday, March 17, 2000 | 10:22 a.m.

Women from all parts of Nevada will bring their voices and questions to Women's Summit 2000 Saturday at the Riviera hotel-casino.

The biennial statewide conference, hosted this year by the Nevada Women's Agenda, will address issues such as economic self-sufficiency, health care, entrepreneurship and families.

Nearly 50 speakers and panelists including business leaders, financial advisers, elected officials and victims of domestic violence are scheduled to participate. About 300 women are expected to attend.

The summit will present opportunities and resources available to women in Nevada and look at what could be improved, Caryll Dziedziak, chairwoman for the Nevada Women's Agenda, said.

Issues such as child care, retirement security, entrepreneurship and influencing decision makers will be the primary focus of the workshops.

Women legislators will meet to discuss a program facilitated by the Center for Policy Alternatives on developing a women-led economic agenda.

Women are 50 percent of the population and more are going to work each year, Bobbie Gang, lobbyist for the Nevada Women's Lobby, said. "They should have an equal voice on issues."

Child care is a big issue, said Cindy Young, state field director for the AFL-CIO. Valerie Murzl, vice president of human resources for Station Casinos Inc., will speak. Murzl will join Jennie Erwin, administrator for the Women's Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor, and Joanne Everts, a grants development director for the Washoe County School District.
