LV woman arrested in scam at speedway

Friday, March 17, 2000 | 11:24 a.m.

The Secret Service and Metro Police have arrested a Las Vegas woman who authorities believe stole credit card numbers from more than 800 Las Vegas Motor Speedway customers.

According to a criminal complaint filed Thursday afternoon in U.S. District Court, an acquaintance of Anjanette Rochelle Harris told Metro detectives earlier this month that Harris has been stealing credit card numbers at the Speedway and he had been scanning them onto a computer disk.

Shortly afterward, Secret Service agents and Metro detectives began monitoring calls between Harris and the acquaintance during which Harris spoke about obtaining more credit card numbers, court records show.

On Tuesday, detectives and agents saw Harris write down credit card expiration dates onto a computer-generated printout at work and put the papers into her backpack.

Harris was arrested as she left work, and she allowed agents and detectives to search her property and vehicle. She was expected to appear at 3 p.m. today before U.S. Magistrate Roger Hunt.

She has been charged with possession of unauthorized access devices.

Secret Service officials said they are contacting the individuals whose numbers were stolen.
