Editorial: Single work card is common sense

State Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, says if she's re-elected she will ask the 2001 Legislature to consolidate the application process for issuing police work cards that are necessary for casino employment in Nevada. Leslie's legislation would create a standard police work card, good anywhere in Nevada.
Currently, if someone is working at a casino in Reno and subsequently finds employment at a casino in an unincorporated area of Washoe County, that police work card isn't transferable, so the employee must apply for a new one again. In addition, if a casino employee from Reno moves to take a job here in Las Vegas, another police work card is required.
Not only does this create some bureaucratic red tape for the individual reapplying, it can also be a costly exercise, since the work cards can cost as much as $74 apiece. This is one of those changes that tend to go unheralded. It does, however, make sense and would be appreciated by casino workers. When the Legislature convenes again it should pass Leslie's worthy legislation.
