LV man sentenced in attempted assault

Tuesday, March 14, 2000 | 10:49 a.m.

A 21-year-old Las Vegas man suspected in three attempted sexual assaults in October was sentenced to two life prison terms Monday.

Shawn Michael Thomson pleaded guilty in December to one count of first-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon and attempted sexual assault.

On Monday he was sentenced by District Judge Mark Gibbons to two consecutive life terms with the possibility of parole after five years not only for the kidnapping, but because a deadly weapon was used. Gibbons also gave him a 16- year sentence on the attempted sexual assault charge that will be served at the same time as the life terms.

According to Metro Police, a man brandishing a knife attempted to sexually assault three women over a two-day period in October. Police got a tip about the whereabouts of a suspect vehicle, which led them to Thomson.

All of the attacks took place near Maryland Parkway and Sahara Avenue.
