LIFT keeping poor out of the dark

Tuesday, March 14, 2000 | 10:13 a.m.

More than $1,199,795 in energy payments have been made for low-income families during the past 14 years through a program sponsored by Nevada Power.

More than 8,107 families have been helped by LIFT, Low Income Financing Together, since September 1985, receiving more than $140 toward their past due utility bills.

"This program has been an important part of the emergency assistance that our Family Service provides to the thousands of local families who find themselves on the verge of becoming homeless," said Lt. Colonel Jim Sullivan, the Clark County Coordinator for the Salvation Army.

A study the Salvation Army conducted for the United Way revealed that over 72 percent of families who use the Salvation Army's Family Service would have become homeless without the emergency aid of projects such as LIFT, Sullivan said.

Sullivan said the Salvation Army is grateful to the thousands of people who have contributed to the LIFT project, and to Nevada Power for its matching donations.
