Nonprofit group gets new officers

The Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada, an agency that provides resources for people and organizations to volunteer in the community, recently appointed Fran Smith as its new executive director.

New officers and elected committee members for 2000 are:

Dawn Merritt, public affairs manager at Sprint, elected chair of the executive committee; Christina Roth, manager of community affairs at Mirage Resorts Inc., was elected vice-chair; and Doretha Bilberry, community relations coordinator for Nevada Power Company, was elected secretary/ treasurer.

For the committee chairs, Barbara Grostick, volunteer coordinator for Clark County Social Services was elected to nominating; Kayla Callas, public affairs director for PacifiCare was elected to fundraising; Jody Bechtel, director of Clark County Conservation District, was elected to public relations; and Karla McComb, assistant director for substance abuse and multicultural education for the Clark County School District, was elected to planning.

Expert helps make healthy choices

A registered dietitian will discuss how to read nutrition labels for proper food choices 10 a.m. Friday at the Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, 2075 E. Flamingo Road. Call 369-7911.

Getting connected in the senior years

Senior Friends is hosting a lecture, "Accessing Senior Services Through the Internet," 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Senior Friends Green Valley Office, 2809 N. Green Valley Parkway. Myra Davis, Project NEON coordinator, will discuss all that is available through computers donated to Senior Friends by the Nevada Division For Aging Services. Call 434-6500.

Valvoline, Martin teaming up

The Valvoline Company and NASCAR racer Mark Martin are teaming up to raise $1 million and recruit new volunteer mentors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America through the 2000 NASCAR season.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America provides mentoring relationships for millions of children throughout the country.

Valvoline will make charitable donations throughout the season based on Martin's performance. Also a Valvoline Online Racing Auction, hosted by www.eBay.com will be from April 28-May 20.

Color guards needed

The American Legion, Post 8, is looking for volunteer color guards. The local chapter is down to only four volunteers. Interested veterans should call 457-4310.

Citizens of Distinction

The Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow is seeking nominations for the Citizens of Distinction, a program that recognizes key employees and community volunteers.

Neighbors, friends and industry associates can be nominated. There are two categories of honorees, the Career Category and the Citizenship Category.

The Career Category recognizes an exceptional employee who excels at their position in a company or organization. The Citizenship Category recognizes a community member who has selflessly contributed to the quality of life in Southern Nevada.

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults. The following clinics will be open this week: Wednesday through March 21.
