Washoe County sheriff's deputies said the animal was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday night on Toll Road in the Virginia Foothills.
The death occurred shortly after deputies heard reports that a man on an all-terrain vehicle was chasing a band of wild horses from the nearby Via Bianca mobile home park.
Deputies were unable to locate the man and still sought to question him Sunday.
The vehicle driver escaped unharmed.
