Ellen Pillard, an associate professor at the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Social Work, said she and nine others have formed the Coalition for Unity.
"It's another hurtful act to say that gays and lesbians are not welcome," Pillard said.
But members of the Coalition for Marriage, which is collecting signatures to put the measure on the Nov. 7 ballot, said their group isn't trying to hurt anyone.
"The whole homosexual community should stop worrying about being victims," Lynn Chapman of Sparks said. "It has nothing to do with them. It has to do with marriage."
The group is trying to gather 44,009 signatures by June 20 to put the measure on the ballot.
