Letter: Press may pay price for stance

Sunday, March 12, 2000 | 9:01 a.m.

The problem for Brian is that the same reasoned and modest quest for control, once in place, can very easily be applied to other areas of the Bill of Rights. For example, we all know the pen is mightier than the sword, and in a recent survey by the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University 53 percent of those questioned said the press has too much freedom.

It has taken an incredible amount of arrogance and elitism on the part of the media to turn a majority of the people against a free press. As the man who conducted the Vanderbilt survey said: "Attitudes are usually followed by actions."

So, Brian, go ahead. Keep advocating for more erosion of the Second Amendment. Just don't look back. Something is gaining on you.
