Letter: Flag controversy shows GOP not party of Lincoln
Sunday, March 12, 2000 | 9 a.m.
Isn't it ironic that so many of the Northern states, whose men were instrumental in winning this war, are Republican strongholds, and their leading candidate, George W. Bush, refuses to repudiate the flying of the Confederate flag for fear of losing votes in the South.
Bush's mealy-mouth inaction on this issue is a disgrace not only to Lincoln, but to the many black and white people who fought to preserve the Union, and end slavery.
