UNLV women's softball coach Shan McDonald glowed as she stood before the crowd gathered at the Si Redd Room in the Thomas & Mack Center.
"Well, ladies," she said to her team. "We're packing up our tent and moving into a house."
A $2.1 million house. University president Dr. Carol Harter announced on Thursday that private donors have contributed more than $3 million to be used for a new softball stadium and to start a women's golf program.
For years the women's softball team has been practicing at the rustic Rebel Diamond.
UNLV athletic director Charles Cavagnaro expects the new stadium that will be built at the corner of Harmon and Swenson to be completed before next season.
The addition of the women's golf team will add about 10 women athletes to the program.
"We're going to take the next academic year to hire a coach," Cavagnaro said. "Then give that person time to recruit, to schedule and raise money before competing the following season."
Donrey Media Group, James and Beverly Rogers, Jerry and Sue Lykins and the Las Vegas Founders Club are the contributors.
