Letter: Social Security is unfair to federal workers

Friday, March 10, 2000 | 9:57 a.m.

As a federal employee retiree, I concur with Louise Rice's letter concerning federal employees also being discriminated against by Social Security due to a government pension offset and the windfall elimination provision.

Due to the offset, a federal retiree who is also a widow has her widow benefits totally wiped out; a widow who has never been employed, receives her total benefit. Also, Social Security retirees who also receive a private sector pension do not have the dual entitlement rule applied to their private pensions like federal retirees do.

Federal employees have always paid a higher contribution rate into their retirement fund than private sector employees have paid into Social Security. Yet recipients of government pensions are being penalized because the average total retirement income is higher than recipients of private pensions. Is this fair?
