Letter: Why the hoopla over Reagan era?

Thursday, March 9, 2000 | 9:45 a.m.

He wrecked the fair -- to all classes -- progressive income tax. This action sent the rich running to the bank, and brought on history's record-breaking deficit in the nation's treasury. It took President Clinton's administration to bring down the deficit and create instead a surplus.

Reagan did a lot more to hurt the nonrich; he busted the unions. He fought against increasing the minimum wage. Meanwhile, he did a lot to benefit the rich.

What the country now needs is Clinton's policy of using the surplus to pay down the national debt and to support Social Security and Medicare. Clinton's program for education and job-making for the nonrich are also commendable.

And Bush's tax cut program is only another GOP gift to the rich.
