County commissioners push for stricter limits

Two Clark County Commissioners are pushing for stricter limits in building casinos near residential areas.

Commissioners Bruce Woodbury and Yvonne Atkinson Gates are co-sponsoring an ordinance that would increase the minimum distance between residential areas and new casinos to 2,500 feet. The current distance is 500 feet.

County commissioners were inundated with complaints earlier this year when they approved a casino for the Spring Valley district, in southeast Las Vegas.

Residents of the area are fighting the proposed 300-room hotel-casino project.

A state law went into effect in January 1999 limiting development of casinos in residential areas. The original law called for a 2,500-foot buffer, but that was later lowered to 500 feet.
