Letter: Supporting drug companies is typical of GOP
Wednesday, March 8, 2000 | 9:07 a.m.
He brings up the standard GOP justification for charging Americans three times what they charge foreigners: They must do this to get revenue to produce the drugs. (How about cutting CEO salaries and taking a lower profit margin?) But what good are these wonderful drugs if only the rich can afford to buy them? Well this question falls on the deaf ears of the party for the rich, by the rich and of the rich, because as long as the rich can afford these drugs everything is just fine. They believe there is no need to worry about the nonrich and poor, especially the elderly who they consider as "leeches looking for handouts anyway!"
This may sound harsh, but it is in complete harmony with the old trickle-down, dog-eat-dog philosophy that to be poor, disabled and/or elderly is some kind of crime, so "these people" don't really count! I continue to be amazed by the way Republicans express such indignation at being portrayed as mean, heartless and greedy when they so fervently support such a philosophy. They can't divorce their reputation from their philosophy, in my opinion!
