Designer sues Ruffin for $900 million over SF resort

Wednesday, March 8, 2000 | 11:10 a.m.

Prominent casino designer Mark Advent sued Ruffin Gaming on Tuesday, asking for more than $900 million in damages for allegedly stealing Advent's ideas to build a San Francisco-themed resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Advent is also seeking a court order that would prohibit Ruffin from moving forward on the concept, claiming it would infringe on his copyrights.

In his lawsuit, Advent claimed he showed conceptual materials to Phil Ruffin and partner Craig Dudley last year. Advent claims the two assured him they would maintain the information in confidence unless they agreed to a joint venture with Advent.

Advent claims Ruffin made an offer to acquire the contractual rights for $10 million, an offer he refused.

Ruffin announced early this year plans to implode the Frontier hotel-casino and build the resort in its place. Advent claims this violated Ruffin's promise that the resort would only proceed as a joint venture with Advent.

Ruffin sued Advent Communications & Entertainment Inc. in January, in hopes of establishing its rights to develop the San Francisco-themed hotel-casino.
