Dealer dishes out life-saving means

A Refuse to Be a Victim safety seminar will be given 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson, 2605 S. Eastern Ave. The three-hour course is taught by certified instructor Kent Mason.

Mason teaches how to prepare a personal defense strategy to prevent becoming a victim of a violent crime. The course is $10 and includes a workbook. For more information, call Mason at 225-5253.

State park cast its line for fishermen

The Jewish Community Center will sponsor a fishing day 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday at Floyd Lamb State Park. Fishers will meet on the southeast side of the upper lake. Cost is a $5 state fee for each car that enters the park. Ages 12 and under do not need a fishing license. Call Myrna at the Jewish Community Center, 794-0090.

Environmentalists aid rural students

The deadline for the Sierra Club's new scholarship program, a program that will provide academic funding for students who are graduating from high school in spring 2000, has been extended from March 4 to March 10.

Five scholarships, each worth $1,000 per year for four years, will be awarded to students who reside in small communities or rural areas within Nevada and are entering programs leading to a bachelor's degree in any academic field. The students may begin their course work in the community college system and transfer to a four-year college.

Caesars to host Opportunity Village

The 25th Concert of Love to benefit Opportunity Village will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Circus Maximus Showroom of Caesars Palace. The event will feature the classic rock group Chicago and impressionist Rich Little along with some of Las Vegas' top entertainment figures. Call 259-3741.

Historic park seeks volunteers

The Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park and Friends of the Fort are seeking volunteers to become members of the Old Fort Docents to provide tours of the park and information to visitors and to help plant and maintain the park's gardens. The first training session will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Old Fort, 500 E. Washington Ave., across from the Sawyer State Office Building. Call 486-3511.

Gourmets work out at Black Mountain

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a three-hour all-American gourmet cooking workshop 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. Participation is $15 with an additional $8 for supplies due to the instructor at class. Advanced registration is recommended. Call 565-2880.

Group holds a diabetes health fair

The Las Vegas International Lions Club and the American Diabetes Association are holding a Diabetes Health Fair 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at the Grand Retirement Community, 6650 W. Flamingo Road. Free admission, free food and free entertainment will be provided. Call Dr. Henry J. Bindson at 242-2332.

Race for cure begins at Galleria

The fifth annual Las Vegas Race for the Cure will be held Saturday at the Galleria at the Sunset mall in Henderson. The race is the largest series of 5-kilometer and 1-mile fitness events in the nation and raises money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds remain in Southern Nevada to support local breast cancer awareness projects.

Chautauqua talk held at NLV library

Chautauquas of Famous Nevada Women will be hosting a Nevada Women's History Project from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive. For more information, call 633-1070.
