Girl, 10, hit by school bus

A 10-year-old girl was in serious condition this morning after she was run over by a school bus Monday afternoon at Nellis Air Force Base.
Chelsey Johnson, a fourth grader at Lomie G. Heard Elementary School on the base, apparently was let off the bus at a stop with other children about 3:45 p.m.. The bus then continued down the street some distance when the girl apparently ran in front of the bus, said Mary Stanley-Larsen, Clark County School District spokeswoman.
Base police are investigating the accident, but Capt. Veronica Kemeny, an Air Force spokeswoman, had no information about the incident this morning. She said Metro Police were assisting with the investigation.
The bus driver, whose name was not available this morning, did not drive her route today, but that was her choice.
"It was a personal decision by her not to drive today," Stanley-Larsen said.
Stanley-Larsen said the accident did not occur as students were leaving the bus.
