August Nights event heats up

The annual tribute to classic cars and rock 'n' roll ended on Saturday morning last year to avoid a repeat of the 1998 melee that erupted when crowds clashed with police. More than 200 people were arrested.
While the event is the city's biggest tourist draw, visitation fell last year. Tourism officials said many people weren't willing to come to Reno for an event that didn't last all weekend.
"We're loosening up a little bit because last year went so well," said Ralph Jaeck, assistant city manager.
If the City Council approves the plan, Saturday events like the show-and-shine and live entertainment, which were canceled last year, will continue until nightfall this year.
The traditional Saturday night cruise will be held on Friday night, and the week-long festival will conclude with a parade on Sunday.
This year's event is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 6.
