Letter: Candidates a bit too cozy with Christian causes
Monday, March 6, 2000 | 9:02 a.m.
We have Bush cozying up to Bob Jones by appearing at Bob Jones University, a school that has a reputation for being anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic and anti-black. We have the religious right bigots with many GOP members of Congress in their back pocket, trying to destroy the wall of separation of church and state.
We have Bush discussing litmus tests for candidates to the U.S. Supreme Court to assure that the Christian Coalition's agenda is successful if elected. We have private "Christian" religious schools frothing at the mouth over the prospect of having taxpayer dollars supporting their causes through a thinly veiled "voucher" system. If anyone in this country believes that religious-based schools will not proselytize, I know a tooth fairy you would probably like to meet.
Sometime soon we should wake up and recognize that Congress is in the grips of the "Neo-Puritans," who are bent upon making the federal government the enforcer of "Christian" causes.
Were I a non-Christian, I would be very selective for whom I vote in November.
