Robert Kehl, 65, was reported in intensive care at University Medical Center after being beaten by a man who approached him at a gas station.
Kehl, the father of Catfish Bend Casinos manager Dan Kehl of Burlington, was attacked Wednesday.
Doctors expect him to recover but say he suffered head trauma in the attack.
Kehl is a former restaurant owner who opened the Dubuque Casino Belle in 1991. He sold the boat in 1993, but sons Dan and Bobby are involved with the Catfish Bend Casinos in Burlington. His daughter, Tina, is involved with the Mississippi Belle II riverboat casino in Clinton.
Robert Kehl and his wife, Ruth, have lived in Las Vegas since selling the Dubuque boat. They own another home in Dubuque.
