UNLV women hold off feisty CSU

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Kinesha Davis scored 22 points, including 16 in the second half, as the UNLV women's basketball team defeated Colorado State 84-69 Thursday night in front of 2,900 fans at Moby Arena.
In a game that was tight throughout, the Lady Rebels (15-11, 7-6 MWC) held off several attempts by CSU (19-7, 9-4 MWC) to claw its way back into the game.
UNLV led by as many as seven in the first half, but lost the lead following an 11-2 run by CSU. After a back-and-forth battle, the Lady Rebels regained the lead just before halftime on a driving layup by Constance Jinks to go up 31-30.
After allowing Colorado State to shoot 66 percent from the field in the first meeting between the two, the UNLV defense stiffened, holding the Rams to 41 percent from the field.
UNLV opened the second half with a 7-0 run of its own, but CSU would not go away and tied the game for the seventh time, at 50 with 12:30 to play. The Rams could get no better than even, however, as UNLV re-took the lead after every tie in the second half. The Lady Rebels finally pulled away, using a 9-0 run with six minutes to play.
Linda Frohlich and Carlesa Dixon each posted double-doubles, as Frohlich poured in 20 points and had 11 rebounds while Dixon added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jinks chipped in with 14 points.
The win guarantees the Lady Rebels their second straight winning season. They will head to Laramie where they will complete the regular season against Wyoming on Saturday before returning to Las Vegas to compete in the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
