Las Vegas' best-known resident racehorse, The Good Lord, has died at the age of 29.
The horse was put down last week at the stable where he had lived since 1978. Owned by Ingrid Hines and kept at her ranch/stable off West Sahara Avenue, The Good Lord won a number of prominent races and established seven track records during his heyday in the late 1970s.
Twice a winner of the Wellington Gold Cup, The Good Lord also won the Sydney Gold Cup and the Eddie Reed Handicap (with Willie Shoemaker aboard) in 1979.
"He was fine until the day he died," Hines said Thursday. "He had a stroke and the doctor said there was nothing we could do. I had to put him down, but he was a great horse and he lived a hell of a life."
