Mesquite mayor facing recall

CARSON CITY -- Chuck Horne, elected last June as mayor of Mesquite, is the target of a recall, the organizers of which say he has created a hostile environment among the citizens in the rapidly growing city.
The notice of recall was filed Thursday in the secretary of state's office. Backers will have to gather the signatures of 384 registered voters within 60 days to force an election.
Horne, a former Republican assemblyman, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Ken Carter, the former mayor and one of the three people who initiated the petition, said there won't be any trouble getting the required signatures.
"From day one, he (Horne) locked horns with the City Council. He went to court on the issue of mayor pro-tem. He's supposed to go to court this week to terminate the city manager and city attorney," Carter said.
"He's made comments he should be the one running the city, not city staff. Generally, he has made us the laughingstock because of his antics."
Carter said he's not doing this because he lost the last election.
"Somebody has to stand up and get this started. I'm one of the silent majority," he said.
The sad part of this, Carter said, is that people worked 16 years to build up Mesquite.
